We hope you’ll always remember your first salsa lesson; Terry does. It was in 1994 when a close friend invited him to an iconic club in Islington. That night he had no idea how much ‘1,2,3…5,6,7’ would change his life!
During the class, he struggled to catch the rhythm, timing, and footwork, so out of determination, he stayed for the social dancing afterwards and repeatedly practised until the basics clicked. This formed his first connection to this beautiful dance. And if you talk to any of our teachers or dancers, you’ll hear them reminisce about how they got hooked on salsa.
We’ve called your Beginner’s Class La Finca because it’s the name of the club where Terry had his first salsa lesson. If you’re about to take your first class, all of us at team Chillout know a magnetic story is on the verge of being written for you too, and we are so excited about welcoming you to ‘La Finca’ because it’s almost certainly going to be the place where you fall in love with salsa.

Salsa Chillout’s first big club was The Belvedere attracting dancers from as far afield as Enfield. It had the tiniest wooden dance floor, squeezing in around 35 dancers at a push; the rest of the room was carpet! Yet the venue was packed frequently with over 100 salsa dancers each Wednesday. This only happened because of the high quality tuition and talent of the teachers who raised the standard of salsa to a benchmark level across the county, laying the foundation for Salsa Chillout to be regarded as the best salsa dance school in Essex, both within and outside the region.
But by 1999/2000, we’d outgrown The Belvedere. It was heaving as word spread. Even Olympian Fatima Whitbread paid us a visit with her friends.
We’ve called your Intermediate class The Belvedere because this is where most salsa dancers learnt their core skills and socialised weekly towards the height of Essex salsa.
Around that time, a member called Ray Berris introduced us to the Marconi club in Chelmsford, which took Salsa Chillout to its peak. The venue was huge, benefitted from an edge-to-edge wooden dance floor, and quickly became the county’s focal point for high-quality salsa. We introduced Saturday parties and invited salsa superstars from London and across the UK to teach guest classes and perform outstanding shows. It was our super club.
Around 2004, ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ made it cool for guys to dance, and there was another salsa explosion. As the appetite for new salsa talent increased, we started flying in international artists from Europe for all-dayers featuring workshops and shows to raise the level of salsa again. Sometimes, we’d invite a live band so dancers could feel the salsa rhythm deep in their souls. From time to time, stars from ‘Strictly’ would teach and perform at Marconi.
If you missed the Marconi era, you missed a unique moment in Essex’s salsa history. Ask anyone who attended what Marconi meant to them, then listen intently as they share their fond memories. But don’t worry if you were not there, our new club will fuse our beautiful history to create a new salsa history, and we are so grateful to have you as a valued part of the ongoing story.
We’ve called your advanced level Marconi because it was where the highest levels of salsa were taught across Essex.
To give you and the others in your lesson the best possible tuition, class progression is done by teacher invitation only as opposed to self-promotion. Minimum salsa skills are assumed and required at intermediate and advanced levels. To prevent being overstretched and slowing your new class down, please chat with your teacher if you think you are ready to move up. We’ll assess you openly and honestly, and if any dance skills still need developing, your Salsa Chillout teacher will focus on putting the missing piece of your puzzle in place so you can move up with confidence at the right time.
As one inspiring salsa teacher said: “It is better to do the basics well than the complicated moves badly.”
