Salsa Chillout was established in 1997 by international teachers Terry & Yolande. Remember the good old days of The Belvedere and Marconi, when we hosted amazing teachers/ performers? In recognition of their contribution to salsa in Essex, some of our members’ favourites appear throughout this website.
Terry has teamed up with one of his original and very talented teachers, Pete Watts, to fuse the nostalgia of the past with the fresh vibe of the future. Come and feel the difference.

Salsa Chillout are brilliant at breaking down techniques, making them really easy to understand. A great way to develop your salsa foundations while keeping it fun.
Salsa Chillout’s warm-ups and classes were always fantastic, which kept me coming back for more. But what I loved the most was the incredibly social atmosphere which made it easy to make lifelong friends.
Salsa is a great way of socialising and developing new skills. I was new to the area when I first went, but I felt so welcome. Thank you, I have also made brilliant friends who I am still in touch with.

You can come with a friend or partner if you want, but visiting alone is fine because we use a socially inclusive rotation system, so you can meet and dance with all the leaders or followers in your class.

Once you know the basics, you’ll be able to walk into any salsa club around the world and be welcomed as if you were part of the family, and this is one of the attractions that makes salsa so addictive. It’s the epitome of social dancing. It’s also a place where lifelong friendships are made.

Great question! We teach On1. Our style is crossbody salsa. If you’re new, you may wonder, “What other salsa styles are there!” – There are many|: Cuban, Puerto Rican, Columbian, On2… the list goes on but don’t worry, over time, you may uncover them all.

We try to have dancers with similar abilities in the same class – so please check with your teacher before moving to ensure you have the right skills to keep up with the higher level you’re considering progressing into. Please also see the note on ’Thinking of Moving Up’ on the classes page.

Not at all, but you may want to bring a change of tops, as you build up a sweat. Regular students wear dance shoes, but if you are new to salsa, please wear comfortable shoes with smooth soles and avoid flip-flops and trainers.
